The 4HB Low Carb diet: experiment with PAGG

This week was a bit of a disappointment. I did not loose an ounce or an inch…nada, zero, nothing. Week 13 of my 4HB diet was for me not really a success. Maybe 13 isn’t a great number after all.

So I decided to shift one gear up and experiment with PAGG. These 4 supplements are recommended by T. Ferriss in the Four Hour body. Meet the 4 horseman of fat-loss.

    Policosanol: 20 mg/day

Policosanol, an extract of plant waxes, often sugar cane. It increases HDL cholesterol and decreases LDL cholesterol. There seems to be a pleasant side effect: an unintended but significant reduction in bodyfat. The addition of policosanol (10–25 milligrams before bed) to the PAGG (then AGG) stack produces, in his experience, far superior effects for fat-loss vs. AGG alone.

Alpha Lipoic Acid: 300 mg (4x)

Alpha-lipoic acid seems to help prevent certain kinds of cell damage in the body, and also restores vitamin levels such as vitamin E and vitamin C. There is also evidence that alpha-lipoic acid can improve the function and conduction of neurons in diabetes. Alpha-lipoic acid is used in the body to break down carbohydrates and to make energy for the other organs in the body. Alpha-lipoic acid seems to work as an antioxidant, which means that it might provide protection to the brain under conditions of damage or injury. The antioxidant effects might also be helpful in certain liver diseases.

Green Tea Flavanols (decaffinated): 326.5 mg ECGG (4x)

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a catechin and flavanol found in green teas.  EGCG increases GLUT-4 recruitment to the surface of skeletal muscle cells. Of equal interest, it inhibits GLUT-4 recruitment in fat cells. In other words, it inhibits the storage of excess carbohydrates as bodyfat and preferentially diverts them to muscle cells. EGCG appears to increase programmed cell death (apoptosis) in mature fat cells. This means that these hard-to-kill bastards commit suicide. The ease with which people regain fat is due to a certain “fat memory” (the size of fat cells decreases, but not the number), which makes EGCG a fascinating candidate for preventing the horrible rebounding most dieters experience.

    Garlic Extract: 200 mg (4x)

Allicin, if delivered in a stable form, appears to have the ability to inhibit fat regain. For precision and convenience, you can use supplements to reach your target baseline in dosing, and use extra garlic in food for delectable (but not necessary) insurance above that baseline.
